Do I need a reservation?
Yes. We recommend booking with us at least two weeks in advance in June, July and August. Tours and lessons can fill up fast!
How do I sign up?
Reservations can be made by phone at (252) 256-9363 or online at www.khkss.com. All participants must submit payment before the lesson or tour. Online reservation requests must be submitted 48 hours prior to the activity.
What should I wear?
Yoga or workout clothes will do the trick. If you have a bathing suit that you don't mind contorting yourself around in, that works too! For paddleboard yoga, there is a chance you will get wet or decide to go for a swim, so dress accordingly!
Why should I book with you?
Our lessons on the Outer Banks focus on having fun, getting some good exercise, and learning in a friendly and safe atmosphere. Jennifer Spore, our lead yoga instructor, has been an outdoor educator for the past 10+ years. She is an accredited American Canoe and Kayak Guide, and has been trained in First Aid and CPR through the American Red Cross. She is a registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance after receiving her 200 hr certification on the Outer Banks through Village Yoga Studio in Duck, NC in partnership with Wilmington Yoga Center and the Kunga Yoga School.
What are your safety protocols?
All lessons are given by a CPR and First Aid trained instructor with years of paddling and yoga experience. Lessons will never occur in dangerous water conditions, very high seas or thunderstorms.
What is a class like, Isn't it hard?
Of course paddleboard yoga can be challenging, but it doesn't have to be. This course has been designed to be as inviting as possible, so whether you're an athlete or a couch potato, my job is to help you explore your range of movement in a way that is safe and comfortable. Every lesson is an hour and a half and begins with on-land instruction, plenty of time to practice paddling and a safe area to experiment with the yoga postures you feel comfortable trying.
How many people will there be?
We maintain a 1:8 ratio of instructors to students. This insures maximum safety, a high quality of individualized instruction and fun in the water for everyone.
Is it safe/clean?
Yes. We swim in the water ALL the time and monitor the water for any unusual activity.
Are you crazy?
Maybe a little. But Paddleboard Yoga really isn't that crazy! Of course it can be a killer ab workout complete with inversions, but there are plenty of other poses to try out... haven't you heard of Savasana?
Will I get wet?
Maybe. In every lesson I teach, someone always swears that they're going to be the first one to fall in... more often than not, the only people that are wet are the ones that got too hot and decided to go for a swim. If you push yourself to try new things, you may lose your balance, if you don't swim well or getting wet terrifies you, then play it safe.
What is a class like?
Each class is 60 minutes and consists of meditation, standing postures, seated postures and breathing techniques. We will move mindfully, respecting our sandy classroom space, so as to not leave our session completely covered in sand. In our sunrise classes, we will move gently, as we wake and welcome the day. In our surf classes, we move at a faster pace, practicing what is called vinyasa. Each class is designed to teach the fundamental components of each pose, as well as breathing techniques that you may find useful during other parts of your day.
How many people will there be?
We do our best to maintain a 1:12 ratio of instructors to students. We want to insure maximum safety, and a high quality of instruction. However, under special circumstances, we do welcome larger groups.
Will I get covered in sand?
I hope not! You will get a little sandy, but we organize each class intentionally to keep the sandiness at a minimum.
What if I've never done yoga before?
Please join us! We gladly welcome the opportunity to guide beginners through their first lesson. Every pose is demonstrated by the instructor with plenty of options to accommodate different shapes, sizes and levels of flexibility.
